What is it about?

Decades of research into corporate social and environmental responsibility have helped us to understand the resources and capabilities that are required for more responsible business practices, but the focus of most business practitioners and thinkers on win-win(-win) solutions may have delayed the adoption of more costly measures to prevent future environmental disasters. In this paper, it is hoped that a more realistic assessment of the strategic challenges at play is presented so that substantial improvements can be made in practice.

Why is it important?

This paper is unique in its emphasis on the multiple dimensions of compatibility that characterise the link between environmental responsibility and corporate strategy. It presents a number of ways in which the compatibility model can inform our understanding of corporate environmental responsibility, and lead to substantial improvements in practice.

Perspectives

This paper reflects an attempt at understanding how environmental and social responsibility can be integrated in business strategies and operations. It offers a four-dimensional framework of compatibility between green and business performance that improves our knowledge of the business case for sustainability beyond the win-win(-win) logic that generally underpins it. The model can be a useful resource for business managers seeking to develop a realistic assessment of the environmental challenges at play, and to think through the managerial response patterns contemplated to address these challenges.
