What is it about?

We develop a multidimensional innovation index (MII) framework for measuring and benchmarking multidimensional innovation of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and groups of SMEs. To do so, we adapt the Multimensional Poverty Index (MPI) framework, used by the United Nations to measure poverty, and composite and partial innovation indicators appearing in the Oslo manual, in the European Innovation Scoreborad, and in the Global Innovation Index.

Why is it important?

SMEs are important sources of innovation. Getting information from SMEs to measure their innovation is often difficult. Like the MPI does with poverty, we think that our framework overcomes many of these informational difficulties. In addition, by adjusting the partial innovation indicators used, the MII framework has the potential to measure innovation of developing countries SMEs, including farms. Moreover, the MII has the same aggregation/ disaggregation nice properties of the MPI, which allow benchmarking SMEs at several levels (sectoral, local/regional, national, and international levels).

Perspectives

We hope the MII can constitutes a useful framework for innovation practioneers: researchers, industries, local governments, national governments, nongovernmental organizations and/or international entities.
