What is it about?
New EU legislation requires all domestic foodwaste to be disposed off and recyled in an environmentally manner. One technology currently employed to process foodwaste is commercial composting, Little is known about the antibiotic resistance nature of compoist coming from this process. A study was performed examining antibiotic resistance in such material. High levels of antibiotic resistance was found in this material. Care needs to taken as to how this material is handling and used in gardening and growing vegetables, so as to avoid increasing the burden of antibiotic resistance further with potential consequences for public health and human medicine.
