What is it about?

Food manufacturers are often subject to a high number and frequency of food safety audits for various reasons . Whether these are too frequent or not frequent enough is not established in this research. What we propose is that the frequency is based on risk rather than the custom and practice of annual audits. This paper is part of a an ongoing project on approaches to food safety management and compliance,

Why is it important?

It is important for two reasons . There is a necessity to ensure that standards of food safety are maintained and auditing is one way of doing so. However excessive audits can put excessive economic pressure on businesses and drive up the cost of food. We suggest a balance needs to be met between frequency of audits , effectiveness of them and cost.

Perspectives

This paper is part of a series that examines various aspects of food safety management and compliance using a cooperative approach.
