Contextualization in the architectural curriculum has a correlation to students’ learning approaches in the architectural design coursework. This paper presents a phenomenographic qualitative analysis of first year architecture students’ learning experience in the design studio.

This paper fills hypothetical questions within pedagogical research pertaining to architectural education focusing on students approaches to learning in the first year of the architectural design studio.

Perspectives

This paper is the first in a series of six papers that will aim to map the entire classification of students' approcahes to learning in the five-years of the architecture program. This paper is based on my ongoing research collaboration with my co-author who supervised my doctoral studies since 2011 - 2018
