What is it about?

The national pledge of allegiance in Singapore made reference to building a democratic society. Students in Singapore recite the pledge daily. But what do students understand about democracy? This study found that overall, students have poor or superficial knowledge of democracy. This needs to be addressed, as students must understand what they pledge, and particularly, if they are expected to carry out what they pledge.
