What is it about?

The inclusion of the babies born by the Chinese females alleviates the population aging in Hong Kong by increasing the total fertility rate (TFR) and relieving pressure on the median age and old age dependency ratio.

Why is it important?

Hong Kong is facing tremendous population pressure posed by population aging. Possible solutions include how to recruit talents from abroad or encourage the citizens to give births. Given the ineffectiveness of recruiting talents to come to Hong Kong via different immigration schemes and lack of incentives to give birth amongst Hong Kong citizens, Hong Kong is still in the doldrums of population predicament. Hence, the babies from the mainland represent one of the viable solutions to solve the population aging. How to strike a balance between pacifying the dissatisfaction among the citizens and attract the babies to come represents a difficult situation for Hong Kong.
