What is it about?

Slight shape variations can have a big impact on the aerodynamics of a glider. In this paper shape optimization allows to get a 35% improvement of the efficiency.

Why is it important?

It explains how advanced shape optimization method can be used for aeronautical applications. Even a small improvement in performances can lead to fuel saving. For a greener and cheaper transportation.

Perspectives

I'm the author of the mesh morphing technology (RBF Morph software) based on radial basis functions used in this study. It's amazing to see how a project driven by Formula 1 in 2007 after ten years is capable to apply advanced concepts in other field. The aeronautical is a very important one.
