What is it about?

Universities often overlook the importance of encouraging creative thinking in students. A review of the current practices in an online distance learning university showed a lack of learning activities that foster creativity. The study investigates whether the creative collaborative group project is a feasible, effective and acceptable learning activity for fostering creativity in students in a fully online master's level course.

Why is it important?

Creativity is an extremely important competency - highly-valued across many disciplines and in demand at work. It tops the list of skills that companies need the most, and is given priority in job recruitment processes because of the crucial role that innovation plays in business. However, while many employers are satisfied with the technical abilities of the students, they express the need for them to develop creative skills. This study addresses the lack of opportunities to exercise and develop creative skills in students of a fully online DE university through the introduction of an innovative learning activity.

Perspectives

I hope that this article dispels the misconception that creative collaborative group projects are difficult to pull off in masteral-level online distance learning courses - so that students can go beyond the usual individual written output (such as essays or reflection papers) and have the freedom to explore their creative side in collaboration with others. Creative collaborative group projects can be both scholarly and fun too.
