What is it about?
Participation is a buzzword easily applied in project proposals and reports. In practice the cooperation between different actors like farmers and scientists is complex - power structures and different interests often collide. In a study about research encounters in Ethiopia we show how the choice of language, places and technologies influences the interaction between farmers and scientists.
Why is it important?
We have applied an approach from STS (Science and Technology studies) to development research. At a moment where the role of science becomes ever more important in development research, but often fails to reach ambitious goals of transdisciplinarity, this paper makes a timely contribution to a more critical view of science in development.
