What is it about?

The “Nature Conservation Atlas” information system was built for the purpose of optimising various working processes with nature conservation data at the Institute of the Republic of Slovenia for Nature Conservation and at the national Environment Agency, as well as in order to make these data more accessible to the public. It is one of the first GIS that enable web site editing of the graphic and attributes at the same time. Most essential in its construction was an accurate analysis of the existing state of nature conservation databases. For this reason, a special application called STRUP was developed during the process of the information system’s construction. Advantages of the established information system can be seen at the level of data as well as of software, hardware, working processes and human resources at several levels. Amongst the most significant advantages are: . establishment of a uniform database; . interconnectibility between separate data sets; . uniform codes at the level of the entire project; . standardisation of data organisation in the information sense; . interconnection of attributive and graphical data; . interconnection of official and more detailed expert data; . simplified data search and analysis; and . reduced chance of errors being repeated owing to the uniform database. As the information system is designed modularly, it will be upgraded in the future with new modules, which will prove to be essential in the course of work. The effect of constructing and implementing the information system will be suitable for evaluation only after some time, when the information system will finally be in its operative use.
