What is it about?

It is an overview of IR developments in the Arabian Gulf region. It describes the IR developments in the major universities of the A-G region. IR developments are in its infancy stage, the paper emphasizes the importance of establishing an IR and urging the major universities to proactively participate in this regard to better serve the scholarly communities of their respective institutions and countries.

Why is it important?

It details efforts made by university libraries in Saudi Arabia and Qatar and some in Bahrain and Abu Dhabi. The paper highlights the importance of IR and recognizes that how they play a significant role in the dissemination and sharing of scholarly information. In order to spur the development of OA and IRs in the A-G region, the author proposes a few important recommendations and urges the universities and other higher institutions of learning to play a proactive role in establishing IRs.
