What is it about?
This article analyzes the concept of Enterprise Content Management (ECM) in five parts. The first part introduces ECM by discussing its relationship with previous terms such as Electronic Document Management Systems and Electronic Records Management Systems. The second part focuses on literature produced in South Africa over the past decade regarding electronic records and document management, along with a discussion on value added resellers in the country. In the third part, survey results from ten South African institutions are presented, including an explanation of the research methodology used, data analysis, and a brief exploration of potential research implications. Concluding remarks are provided in the fourth part, while a list of references is included in the fifth section.

Why is it important?
There has been limited focus on the implementation of ECM in South Africa and this analysis provides empirical data on the current state of ECM implementation laying a foundation for more extensive research in the future.
Perspectives
According to the survey discussed in this article, institutions in South Africa have an average of eight years of experience with implementing ECM with the majority of these institutions using applications provided by a single company.
