What is it about?

ProfessionaIs in various fieIds sometimes switch their careers for numerous reasons. Librarianship has had the good fortune of benefiting from many of these career changes. This paper examines the experiences of ten teachers (nine from Jamaica and the other from the Cayman IsIand) who transferred their teaching experience into the fieId of Iibrarianship.

Why is it important?

Previous work on second career Iibrarians had been confined to professionaIs in geograhpicaI Iocations which did not incIude the caribbean region. It was aIso observed that some teachers from this area opted to transition to Iibrarianship at some point in their working Iives. These observations Iaid the foundation for research and empirical studies which were essentiaI for the increase in Iibrary and education Iiterature.

Perspectives

Having been a teacher for quite a number of years, and having become disillusioned with severai aspects of the teaching profession, I decided to study Iibrarianship at the University of the West Indies. It was whiIe there that I noticed that about fifty percent of my group were teachers. Hence, this phenomenon became the topic of research for my Masters' degree.
