What is it about?
Open innovation is becoming increasingly important in many sectors. The open source technology development is a collaborative effort in which the results are used, shared and modified freely by the people without any Intellectual property hurdles. Such phenomenon is quite popular in the software development. This research work tries to correlate the critical success factors extracted from Open Source Software (OSS) projects study to that of Open source projects in the tangible products (also called open design). The literature is found wanting in having a theoretical framework for open design. We undertake rigorous literature survey in an effort to build generic theory behind the phenomenon of open innovation and see its application to two cases of open source drug discovery (for neglected diseases such as malaria and tuberculosis).
