Standards needed? An exploration of qualifying exams from a literature review and website analysis of university-wide policies

What is it about?

One of the major steps towards a PhD in the US is a qualifying examination that occurs midway through most PhD programs. We examined publish reports and university websites to determine if best practices have been identified and implemented. We found that there is no established standards for qualifying exams.
