Why is it important?

We have few empirical illustrations of how white supremacy culture manifests in organizations. To dismantle white supremacy culture we must demonstrate how it works.

Perspectives

With this paper, we are sharing our experiences with white supremacy culture in an organization that supports queer and trans youth. These experiences were shocking and heartbreaking given the mission of the organization is to support a historically marginalized community. But, through our research, we discovered how common it is for nonprofit organizations to perpetuate white supremacy culture. This discovery prompted us to use our experiences as a cautionary tale to nonprofit professionals. As an antidote to the harm we experienced, we provide recommendations for structural changes organizations could implement to prevent these issues from emerging.
