Perspectives

Knowledge and skills in various disciplines have primarily defined university teaching practices. This assumption has limited the content experts' teaching on technical knowledge and skills. College students need to develop general competencies beyond technical or domain-specific capabilities. It is equally essential for students to learn to collaborate, communicate, and solve problems that they deem to be valuable. This article advocates the belief that self-directed learning is a crucial competency in talent development.
