What is it about?

The purpose of this paper is to analyse environmental sustainability policy practices of the hotel industry in New Zealand (NZ) as disclosed in their web sites and to compare them with a global standard in reference to the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). The study found the businesses in the hotel industry in New Zealand are lagging behind in regards to environmental sustainability practices in comparison to GRI. The data analysis identified three main findings about NZ businesses: firstly, they did not follow strictly the global standard guidelines in reporting environmental impact; secondly, they have not quantified the impact or related reductions of environmental damage, and thirdly, they did not cover all relevant impact areas as outlined by the GRI in reporting sustainability initiatives.
