What is it about?

The literature on nurse training has recognised that education, by its nature, is stressful because of the exposure to a range of potentially stressful situations. Some stressors that have been identified include dual aspects of training which include practice and academic components, types of emotional interaction with other professionals, interpersonal aspects of nursing care.

Why is it important?

The present findings that students using problem-focused and optimism strategies, which are associated with experiencing less stress; rather than, an emotion-focused approach such as avoidance which was associated with increased stress, can lead to valuable practical advice.

Perspectives

It would seem reasonable to suggest that problem-focused coping skills could be a useful recommendation to incorporate as a part of broader coping skills courses embedded within present nurse training curricula or as elective courses for enhancement.
