What is it about?

This is the first study to investigate service user experiences of a pilot OPD pathway service [PERS] in one of the UK's open prisons. All participants reported experiencing significant challenges managing the transition into open conditions, due to the impact of institutionalisation and difficulties in their relationships with staff and other prisoners. The experience of PERS seemed to alleviate some of the challenges, where individuals built positive relationships with PERS staff, and found the service structure supportive, providing them with hope. Despite the challenges faced in open conditions by this population, these findings present positive perceptions of this pilot OPD service. While the study has limitations, there are important clinical implications, notably the importance of services like this in the open prison estate.
