What is it about?

Collective Intelligence is the shared knowledge, know-how and wisdom of any community or group of people. Entrepreneurship has traditionally been individually-centred, but social, community, mission-driven and network organisations need to operate collectively. So we explore how can communities of entrepreneurial people can learn to act effectively, collectively and knowingly?

Why is it important?

Communities and organisations which can make optimum use of their shared agency, intelligence and ability to act are much more effective than traditional organisational forms. We propose a model of four processes that enable intelligence, agency and action: collaboration; distributed working; intelligence representations and organisation of infrastructures. This is evidenced by four case studies of communities using collective intelligence effectively for effective innovation, productivity, and connectivity to external factors.

Perspectives

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is highly topical, but we need to balance human and social intelligence with cybernetic intelligence to have the optimal balance for effectiveness - both are essential, operating in synergy. This requires organisational change. Also, distributed organising has greater resilience than traditional “command and control” modes, in environments of emergence, complexity and conflict. These scenarios are becoming more prevalent, so the value of ECI is likely to increase.
