A survey of study skills of first-year university students: the relationships of strategy to gender, ethnicity and course type

What is it about?

This paper connects the study skills that new college students say they use with their performance in their first college courses and their demographic information. We find self-testing and re-reading are associated with higher grades. Flash cards, commonly used by women, minority students and first-generation students are associated with lower grades.
