What is it about?

We investigated how global commodity price shocks, particularly in food and energy, affect Morocco’s food market. The findings identify transportation and fertilizer costs as critical channels through which these shocks are transmitted. Using data from 2009 to 2024, the research examines their impact on key commodities like dairy, meat, and oils.

Why is it important?

Global price spikes in commodities often lead to higher costs for transportation and fertilizers, which in turn raise food prices in Morocco. Understanding these connections helps policymakers and organizations focus on stabilizing these key inputs. Doing so can protect Moroccan consumers from extreme price volatility, improving food affordability and economic resilience during global crises.

Perspectives

Conducting this research was a valuable learning experience. It helped us better understand how transportation and fertilizer costs influence food prices in Morocco, an issue that is sometimes overlooked. We hope this article encourages further discussion on ways to strengthen the food system and protect consumers from price volatility.
