What is it about?

With the technological advances and the popularity of social network sites amongst students, the use of Facebook for teaching and learning has been steadily increasing. We conducted an informal learning activity through Facebook to supplement students’ learning at university which indicates that students can be motivated to use social media to seek several gratifications.

Why is it important?

This study explains how teachers can use inexpensive and easily accessible technology tools, like social media platforms, to create personalized learning environments for students. It focuses on using Facebook as a way to engage students in informal learning that complements their formal education at university.

Perspectives

As a teacher, writing this paper has made me realise the benefits of using affordable technologies in education. Conducting the e-Tutor online activity for a group of university students and learning from their motivations and experiences was a rewarding experience for me. This paper provides a detailed account of those experiences and explains how social media, specifically Facebook, can be used to enhance learning.
