What is it about?

The first-ever HIV sentinel surveillance among prisoners was conducted in India from February to April 2019. Findings from seven prison sites in North India are presented in this paper. HIV prevalence in inmates was higher at 0.96% (95% CI 0.65-1.40) than the general population (0.22%). The undertrial prisoner status, length of stay the in prison of three months to one year, number of incarcerations, and history of having ever injected drug for pleasure were associated with higher odds of being HIV positive.
