What is it about?
This article presents a systematic literature review of the challenges that business enterprises face when implementing the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Using PRISMA guidelines, the review analyses 16 academic studies and categorizes the challenges into four key dimensions: technical, legal, organizational, and regulatory. It also highlights major gaps in the existing research, such as limited focus on large enterprises and underrepresentation of diverse industries, and provides a roadmap for future research on GDPR compliance within the business context.

Why is it important?
The GDPR has reshaped how businesses manage personal data, but compliance remains a complex and costly process. While many studies examine GDPR from legal or public-sector perspectives, few focus on the practical implementation issues within business environments. This review is important because it consolidates current knowledge, identifies overlooked fields of study, and calls for more empirical research.
Perspectives
Working on this article was a chance to step back and make sense of the growing complexity around GDPR compliance in business. I hope our review helps open up the conversation, not just for scholars, but also for business leaders and policymakers looking for clarity in this space. If you’ve ever faced GDPR challenges in practice or studied them academically, I think you’ll find something here that resonates.
