What is it about?
Acknowledging that housing forms a large part of households’ and country’s long-term wealth, the South African government has implemented transfer duty exemption, among other policies, to encourage home ownership since January 1950 to date. We investigates for the first time the effect of such transfer duty exemption on housing demand in the City of Johannesburg (CoJ), where a comprehensive data set on house sales and other predictors was available.
