Spatial challenges of hybrid work: an exploration of Dutch university campuses

What is it about?

Hybrid work is transforming how university campuses are used, creating challenges for real estate and facilities professionals in designing spaces that meet the needs of university staff. To understand these challenges, we engaged real estate and facilities managers from 12 of the 14 Dutch universities to identify their biggest concerns regarding hybrid work and campus spatial planning. The findings revealed five critical challenges, including managing resistance to change, balancing autonomy with control, addressing both individual and group needs, accommodating diverse work styles, and managing underutilized spaces without causing overcrowding.
