What is it about?
Only 6% of refugee students attend college, so our research explores the identities, experiences, and beliefs of two young women from refugee backgrounds who successfully made it to college. We found that the sources of their determination and aspiration were in part their English teacher cultivating a belief in the possibility of college and helping to prepare them for that journey; family and community fostering beliefs about the power and potential of education; and the motivating impact of refugee role models who helped them to envision their potential futures.
