What is it about?
It costs USD 684,065 per project to process Request for Information. We analysed the volume of RFIs on 168 sample projects, where they come from, what their turnaround time is; and when do RFIs occur on projects. RFI metrics developed can be used as benchmarks to compare and monitor RFI turnaround time on projects.

Why is it important?
RFI is a communication processes used in project controls. They are time-sensitive and can have impact on project outcomes. Monitoring and benchmark RFI should enable project team identify aspects of project communication that needs improvement. We analysed and developed benchmarks for RFI volume, RFI Turnaround time and factors influencing them.
Perspectives
I am delighted to have worked on the research leading to this article. We analyzed the volume of RFI and RFI turnaround time on real world projects (n=168) as well as factors influencing them. The research approach demonstrate how data from completed projects can give insight into how new projects can be managed to achieve greater efficiency and better outcomes. Data is the new oil.
