What is it about?

Nature diaries are a form of personal writing where the author records observations of animals, flowers, plants, birds and other creatures when out enjoying the countryside. This paper explores the nature diaries kept by the Revd Gilbert White 250 years ago and interpret them as 'accounts' of biodiversity. We then compare his accounts of species to the species in the UK now in the light of the ongoing crisis in the natural world and the extent to which species he observed in large numbers are now dwindling.
