What is it about?

COVID-19 increasingly appears to constitute a complex disease affecting multiple components of the cell and multiple organs (Barrantes, F.J (2021). The unfolding palette of COVID-19 multisystemic syndrome... Brain Behav. Immun.-Health 14:100251). Many of these deleterious effects are mediated by proteins of the virus that form ion channels in the membranes of the infected cells., Knowledge of the structure and function of these channel proteins lags behind the enormous progress recently accomplished on other components of these viruses.

Why is it important?

Viral ion channel proteins are possible targets for therapeutic interventions in COVID-19.

Perspectives

Understanding the structure-function correlations of ion channels in viruses is a crucial step towards the design of drugs interfering with coronavirus infections.
