What is it about?

We describe the ideas behind the DIALS data analysis software, their implementation and application. DIALS is used to analyse diffraction images from crystals of biological macromolecules such as proteins as well as smaller molecules like peptides or inorganic materials. DIALS is a collaboration between a number of laboratories worldwide and is freely available to all through an open source license.

Why is it important?

This is the openly available collaborative software for X-ray diffraction data analysis and we aim to meet the challenges posed by the development of new X-ray sources, new detectors and new data collection methods. DIALS can also be used to analyse data from other sources such as electron diffraction and potentially neutron diffraction.

Perspectives

The DIALS project is now about 5 years old and the software has already been widely adopted in the world-wide community of protein crystallographers. We are continually developing DIALS and aim to keep it at the leading edge of data analysis in future. This article should act as the principal citation for the use of DIALS.
