What is it about?

Polymorphism is the ability of a material to exist in 2 or more forms. While it is well studied in organic systems, such as pharmaceuticals, it is less well explored in metal compounds. Using crystallography we show that the polymorphism in this system is induced by the solvent and different conformations of chains in the compound.

Why is it important?

Understanding polymorphism may allow us to better design new materials, either to access materials with improved properties or limit waste in the manufacture of metal based chemicals.

Perspectives

While this is a simple paper it highlights how poorly this area of chemistry is understood. With more examples and a better understanding of how polymorphism impacts the properties of such materials we hope that better design strategies for tailor made materials will emerge.
