What is it about?

The compounds possessing fluorescence properties have been widely studied, however, there is still a deficiency of cheap, non-toxic compounds, which upon irradiation by UV light, produce light visible by naked eye. The paper describes the design, synthesis, structure and luminescence properties of two new coordination compounds based on cheap, simple organic ligands and zinc thiocyanate. Additionally, the paper presents elucidation of the structural properties in terms of the observed fluorescence effects.

Why is it important?

There is a need to design and synthesise new cheap non-toxic compounds and materials possessing fluorescence properties due to their endless applications in modern industry and science. Additionally, determination of the compound structure and subsequent correlation of it with the observed spectral effects is crucial in the determination of the molecular mechanism of the action of such molecules and in the designing of them.

Perspectives

The structural chemistry of the compounds possessing the fluorescence properties have been extensively explored, however still there is a need for new compounds which can be easily synthesised, which are non-toxic and cheap. The studied compounds belong to above mentioned group, and presented correlation between the structure and fluorescence effects may help designing of compounds with desired light-emission properties.

The permanent necessity of production of more and more efficient fluorescence materials, caused by incessantly increasing application requirements, forces a development in designing and synthesis of new coordination compounds. The proper selection of ligands allows the construction of compounds exhibiting expected luminescent properties. The knowledge about how the structural features can affect the luminescence contributes to the progress in many areas of modern industry and science.
