What is it about?

Single crystals of NaFe(C2O4)2(H2O)4 have been synthesized and the X-ray analysis have shown the space group to be I41 and the structure is unique among the AIMIII( (C2O4)2(H2O)n (n=2, 3 or 4) series. This new coordination polymer seems to be the first compound obtained with the Na atom combined with a 3d element. The structure consists of cis- NaO(4)(H2O)2 and cis- FeO(4)(H2O)2 octahedra µ2-bridged by oxalato ligands. One-dimensional and infinite zigzag chains parallel to [100] and [010] directions are formed and connected together through strong hydrogen bonds. In addition, the compound is found to be a precursor of the ternary oxide NaFeO2 from thermal analysis while the IR and UV-Visible absorptions are in good agreement with the environment of the oxalate ligand and Fe(III) atom.
