What is it about?

Metal Additive Manufacturing (AM) is a production technique that builds objects layer by layer using metal powder and a laser. In this paper, we use Bragg edge neutron imaging to look deep inside AM materials and investigate how this process influences the quality of the final parts.

Why is it important?

The novelty of this work lies in the specific geometry (star-shaped) and materials used of the samples (stainless steel 316L, low-carbon steel 16MnCr5 and pure copper). These specific configurations allowed us to evaluate both the manufacturing process and the capabilities of the neutron Bragg edge analysis technique.
