What is it about?

One new serotonin structure was determined. Serotonin (5-HT) conformations in all crystalline structures were compared but only two main conformations were found: planar and folded. All intermolecular interactions were found and explained. Change of serotonin geometry in one structure was explained in details.

Why is it important?

Serotonin is one of the most "popular" neuromediator in human beings with broadest action in different systems. Some crystal structures were known and one (pharmaceutical formulation) was determined. All intermolecular interactions were found, compared and their role in crystal structure formation was explained in details. Not hydrogen bonds but other less powerfull interactions are in charge of serotonin geometry change.

Perspectives

One of the examples of how conformational analysis can be done with the variety of software. A role of the conformation in the crystal structure is suggested.
