What is it about?
The present technique gives a simpl way of determining relative weight ratios of individual copmponents in mixtures by using X-ray diffraction technique. Just observed X-ray diffraction intensities and chemical composition data of the indivual phases are required for deriving weight ratios.

Why is it important?
To find relative weight ratios of individual components in mixtures is important for characterizing materials not only in research and development of new materials but also in quality control of industrial products for keeping high quality. Currently used techniques require crystal structure parameters, experimentally determined intensity ratios with standard materials etc. The present technique uses just chemical information of target materials, and it can be applied to materials, which could not be analyzed because of lack of crystallographic information.
Perspectives
In deriving the formula for calculating the weight ratios, the Patterson function, which I learned when I was a student in crystallography, played an important role. I hope this article is useful not only in practices but also in recognizing the importance of learning basic princples in the X-ray crystallography as well as other physical sciences.
