What is it about?
This is like the scenario adopted by Boltzmann. In static spacetime, which is like an equilibrium scenario, the holographic equipartition holds. This leads to the equipartition law for energy in a given spacetime volume just like a thermodynamic system. While for non-static situation the difference between surface and bulk degrees of freedom is responsible for spacetime evolution.

Why is it important?
It is extremely important, for this shows that the spacetime can be thought of as an thermodynamic system. Thus the dynamics of spacetime (governed by gravity) is actually thermodynamics. Hence gravity should be an emergent phenomenon.
