Generation of Schroedinger cat states of the ionic motion

What is it about?

A novel scheme of generation of superpositions of coherent states (Schroedinger cat states) of a vibrating trapped ion is proposed.

Why is it important?

A trapped ion is a massive system basically in harmonic motion, and Schroedinger cat states of such a system are quite appealing. Besides, its generation is dissipation-assisted; the pure cat states are generated after photons are leaked from the cavity.
