What is it about?

A natural compound from an ocean bacteria blocks insulin secretion from specialized pancreatic cells. This compound, called chromomycin, has been investigated for its anti-cancer properties, but there have been relatively few studies of its effects on endocrine cells such as pancreatic insulin-secreting beta cells.

Why is it important?

Chromomycin and compounds like it may have unintended effects on glucose metabolism through suppression of pancreatic beta cell function. New versions of these compounds with better cytotoxicity profiles may become useful alternatives for different disease therapies.
