What is it about?

We isolated Leptospira from soils and submitted the isolates to WGS. ANI & AAI showed the presence of 12 novel species, uncovering an unexpected biodiversity of this genus, and suggesting that soils are the original habitat of leptospires. In addition, we show that a subset of species, within the cluster "Pathogens", have a very low virulence towards classical animal models and can be discriminated from the virulent species by a specific subset of genes.
