This publication gives a historical perspective on the evolution of tsunami warning products delivered to the general public since the1940s. Discussions revolve around the motivation for these products ( damaging tsunamis and false alarms) and the technologies that evolved to improve the usefulness of more relevant products. Recommendations are made for a new generation of tsunami warning products that will enable society to coexist with the tsunami hazard.
