Why is it important?

So little is appreciated about the flow and storage of water beneath the Antarctic ice sheet. Research in this area is thus one of true discovery. Our view of subglacial Antarctica has changed hugely over the past decade. This article lists some recent discoveries that have further enlightened our appreciation of the sub-ice environment in Antarctica.

Perspectives

I have worked for over 20 years on Antarctic glaciology and in particular on Antarctic subglacial lake environments. This article is one of several within a new Phil Trans A volume on subglacial Antarctic environments.
