What is it about?
In this study, we wanted to expand on previous findings; we wanted to know if the expression of heat shock protein genes varies with embryos from different regions. So we compared expression data from embryos from Dirk Hartog Island, a temperate beach, to embryos from the Exmouth region (Bungelup Beach), a sub-tropical/tropical beach. More importantly, we wanted to know if the expression of hsps is heritable in sea turtles.

Why is it important?
Heritability in expression is key because, in order for sea turtles to adapt, the way they respond to increased temperatures must be inherited and therefore passed on to future generations. We found that expression levels of hsp60, hsp70, and hsp90 are heritable, which provides a platform for adaptation to warmer environments.
