What is it about?

Collision of an ice crystal onto a solid substrate leads to its fragmentation or attrition, if the impact velocity is high enough. We have studied how the critical velocity of ice fracture depends on the particel size

Perspectives

This is a joint study of TU Darmstadt and AIG on ice particle fragmentation due to its collision with a solid surface. It allows to determane a relevant scales of particle fragmentation. The research will help us to model also a particle impact onto a wetted substrate, leading to the particle sticking. The model is required for the physical description of the ice crystal accretion inception.
