What is it about?
Omura's whales are the most recently discovered baleen whale, described only in 2003 after being confused with Bryde's whales for decades. Prior to our study they were only known from a handful of strandings, whaling specimens, and scattered unconfirmed sightings. We have identified a population off Nosy Be, Madagascar, extending the range of the species into the west Indian Ocean, and describing its ecology, behavior and vocalizations.
