What is it about?

DNA replication in the Gram-positive bacterium Bacillus subtilis depends on two specialized DNA polymerases (termed DnaE and PolC) alike in eukaryotic cells. Here we show that the activity and fidelity of the lagging strand polymerase DnaE are strongly stimulated by interactions with proteins of the replication machinery.

The study uncovers at the molecular level the diversity of bacterial replication machineries and highlights similarities with eukaryotic systems.

Perspectives

It is of great importance to improve our understanding of DNA replication in Bacillus subtilis as this organism is a model of choice to study how DNA replication is under the control of cell's metabolism (see our papers published in PLoS One in 2007 and in DNA Research in 2018.
